There are few opportunities in Antigua & Barbuda where music lovers can enjoy two nights of pulsating steelband music infused with performances by notable local, regional, and international entertainers.
This event is the GEMONITES MOODS OF PAN festival, the longest running festival on the Antigua & Barbuda national events calendar apart from the Carnival celebrations.
In 1998 the administration of Gemonites Steel Orchestra extended an open invitation to any and everyone to visit their panyard for FREE steelpan practical and theoretical lessons. This marked the beginning of the Gemonites School of Pan. The public response was extremely overwhelming and more and more young musicians flocked to the School of Pan. The downside was that School of Pan did not have sufficient steelpan equipment on which the novice pannists could practice. Gemonites decided to host a fundraising concert to assist with the operational costs of School of Pan, including the building of steelpan equipment. And, thus, in 1999, the first MOODS OF PAN concert was held.
More than two remarkable decades later, MOODS OF PAN continues to be the only music festival of its kind in the OECS region, where the featured instrument is the steelpan. Music and Culture are the two most powerful drivers of community participation and engagement. Music is such a big part of Antigua’s community, bringing together artists and performers who share stories and culture through their musical presentations.
